The Dakota is one of New York’s most illustrious National Historic Landmarks. Completed in 1884, the co-op building has been home to notable residents, including John Lennon, Leonard Bernstein and Lauren Bacall. Ageloff Design Group was retained by empty nesters who were moving from the suburbs to Manhattan to enjoy the city and its amenities. The design called for joining two adjacent, modest-sized apartments into a single spacious home that complements the formality, details and spirit of the building. Custom elements transform the stripped-down interior to its original splendor, including carved mantelpieces, etched glass and hand-pulled plaster crowns. A carefully composed color palette of grey neutrals, and tones of violet, rose, burgundy, and pink unify the residence. The home is transformed into a classic 19th-century Dakota apartment that includes modern conveniences such as integrated audio/video, a steam shower and abundant storage space to provide a functional, yet truly personal home.
